The Author's Editor As Enabler

Image
I'm talking to you if you are a columnist, lecturer, preacher, speaker, virtual assistant and anyone else who must deal with the written word before going out and trying to conquer the world. Today, writing a letter, article, speech, campaign, or presentation is a journey in the intellectual as well as the digital worlds. And the Author's Editor is your journeyman who will take you across the river, or downstream, or upstream, or all of the above, as may be necessary depending on what he discerns as your objective and its fulfilment. You want to navigate the river yourself? The journeyman knows better. He knows the river like he knows the bamboo raft and the bamboo pole he uses for steering. He is the Enabler. Bruce W Speck writes on "The Professional Writing Teacher As Author's Editor" (11 March 2009, Taylor & Francis Online, tandfonline.com ). The author's editor... is an emerging model of the editor-author relationship that focuses on h...

How Much Does Wikipedia Know About Author's Editing?

Image
Wikipedia knows much, but it also needs much author's editing! In the first place, the title "Author Editing" as entry (Wikipedia, en.wikipedia.org ) is not correct; the very first 3 words of the text under the title contradicts or corrects it: An authors' editor is a language professional who works "with authors to make draft texts fit for (the) purpose". He or she edits manuscripts that have been drafted by the author (or authors) but have not yet been submitted to a publisher for publication. It should be titled "Authors' Editor" – Wikipedia, this is your author's editor speaking! The mistake is repeated in the 3rd sentence of the 1st paragraph, after my quote above: This type of editing is called author editing , to distinguish it from other types of editing done for publishers on documents already accepted for publication: an authors' editor works "with (and, commonly, for) an author rather than for a ...

Author's Editor or Authors' Editor? Who Needs Them Anyway?

Image
I just googled the following lines and got these results: "author's editor" –"authors' editor" (I got 8,550 web pages.) "authors' editor" –"author's editor" (I got 32,000 web pages.) The minus sign (–) means excluding the term in between double quotes. The results of my search mean that "authors' editor" is 4 times the more acceptable term than "author's editor." But, looking at the webpages, I see that Google is erroneous – it includes entries that say "editors or authors" and "authors – editor" and "authors, editor" and "authors/editor" and so on! Google Search does not know that the double quotes mean "give me this exact phrase and not anything that looks like It, or where the two words simply appear together"?! Never mind Google's AI inaccuracy and sloppiness. As an editor of 4 decades, I prefer "author's editor"...

Even in writing, the best defense is a good offense

Image
About defense and offense, Wikipedia says ( en.wikipedia.org ): "The best defense is a good offense" is an adage that has been applied to many fields of endeavor, including games and military combat. It is also known as the strategic offensive principle of war. Generally, the idea is that proactivity (a strong offensive action) instead of a passive attitude will preoccupy the opposition and ultimately hinder its ability to mount an opposing counterattack, leading to a strategic advantage. In any war, in other words, strike first, and strike hard. If you are a virtual assistant, learning from that, in writing something to be considered by others, you must present your best. You are always in a war (undeclared) – against your competitor, or against the standards of the virtual office. In the image I show above, dated 21 December 2012, I was writing "Meetings & How To Conduct Them" because as a Board member, I saw that the Board members of th...

So, How Can An Author's Editor Help Anyone?

Image
First, let us establish credentials.  The image you see above is only a part of what you can see if you visit my blog, A Magazine Called Love ( blogspot.com ), which has at the moment more than 2000 long essays of at least 1000 words each. Note the slogan: "Frank H, world's most highly original, creative writer online." My other blog, Creative Thinkering ( blogspot.com ), has its own list of 950 long essays. My slogan there is: "World's creative genius online, writer of non-fiction." My name blog, Frank A Hilario ( blogspot.com ), has 470 long essays. My slogan there is: "A creative writer, his medium & idiom blend into a rich reach." That's a total of 3,420 long essays. I have other blogs. My estimate is that I have written and uploaded at least 4,000 long essays. Those essays were written mostly within the last 12 years, from 2005. And oh yes, I received in 2011 the award for being the Outstanding Alumnus For Cre...

I, Author's Editor

Image
MANILA: An image of eternity? An image of fertility early in the morning. You're looking at a posterized image of my original shot inside a Pangasinan Solid North bus going to my hometown Asingan in Eastern Pangasinan, taken 27 February 2015 at 7 AM (I don't really remember but my Lumix FZ100 camera automatic digital record says so). Of course that isn't me, but it could have been. It's picture perfect! Message? Whether you're an artist or a scientist or a professional or government employee or just plain somebody, if you just look outside of your box, you can see layers of hope, opportunities, sensitivities. And a wide expanse of creativity. All you have to do is reach out physically or intellectually or spiritually. If you are an author and need help, an author's editor should be showing near you. I'm not the first nor the last. With this essay, I am officially closing and will be deleting soon the 24 essays and itself the blog A Senior For Wr...
